St Petersburg University together with the analytical company "Expertise Integration" announces a competition for young researchers of the African Continent. The winner will receive financial support for an expedition to the countries south of the Sahara.

The All-Russian grant competition “Voices of Africa” was established in memory of Evgenii Shurygin (1990-2016), a post-graduate student of St Petersburg University, a young Africanist from St Petersburg, and a worker at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Addis Ababa.

The grant is focused on field research. Any project belonging to the social sciences – anthropology, folklore studies, sociolinguistics, history, linguistics, etc. – will be accepted for consideration. The deadline for applications is 15 May 2019.

The professional jury includes leading Russian researchers in social and human sciences, as well as representatives of the business community. It will choose the author of the best project.

The first “Voices of Africa” competition was held in 2017. The winner was Galina Sim, a post-graduate student at the Institute of Linguistics, the Russian Academy of Sciences. The main concern of her field research was to collect linguistic data on the idioms in the endangered language Ndoe.
