Another example showing traditional Arabic way of carrying swords, can be found on the illustrations to the mid-13th C. Maqamas of al-Hariri in Iraq and early 14thC. Rashid al-din’s “WorldHistory”miniatures from Tabriz, on the scenes depicting the life of the Prophet 1 (Fig. 11–12). This tradition survived for long, until it was suppressed by a new fashion of attaching swords to the belt, which happened almost everywhere in the Middle East — except Sudan and Arabia.
