340 Dimitrios G. Letsios Leo VI the Wise and the Saracens: The Image of the Arabs in His Military Collection 1 Summary. Leon VI composed his military compendium in the tenth century, in conformity with the spirit of the “Macedonian renaissance”. In his Taktika Leo endeavored to supply his generals and military leaders with guidance, derived from ancient wisdom, in order to properly and successfully counter the Empire’s opponents. A non- campaign Emperor, in the spirit of the Macedonian antiquarianism, renovates the Byzantine experience in warfare by elaborating mostly upon existing military manuals. The Taktika of Leo VI express the literary encyclopedism in the field of military handbooks.
