566 V. Современная арабская литература: биографии и переводы Kamil Hassan al-Maghour (Maghur) Kamil Hassan al-Maghour (Maghur) is a Libyan novelist, journalist and government official. He was born in 1935 in Tripoli (Dahra district). In 1957 he graduated from the Cairo University, then worked as a lawyer in Tripoli. In the public domain, he served in various diplomatic and international legal postings, including service as ambassador to the United Nations (1972–1976), ambassador to France (1976–1978), the first Libyan ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (1978–1981), Libya’s Minister for Foreign Affairs (1986–1987). In 1982 he was appointed Minister for Petroleum, and in 1984 served as Secretary General of OPEC. He was a Libyan representative at the International Court of Justice, The Hague. He was leading the defense team at the Lockerbie case, being Libya’s legal representative in handling sanctions and charges associatedwith thematter. In 1989 he returned to private law practice inTripoli. He was aMember of theRoyal Academy ofMorocco. Besides that, al-Maghour is a renown Libyan writer. Between the 1950s and July 2000, he published eight books of short stories, including “14 Novels About My Home City” (1965), “ACrucified Yesterday” (1968), and others.
