For several centuries there had been soul-chilling legends in the area about Ishinome – a woman with a petrifying look of her eyes. Despite the scientific-technical progress and skeptical attitude to such beliefs in the world of smartphones and computers the residents of the mountainous area were preparing for the possible meeting with Ishinome since their early childhood learning to run away from her with their eyes closed – not to become stone. Losing their way in the mountains the young men got into an old house with no signs of civilization. Finding out that the house was surrounded with countless statues so much alike real people that the sculptor’s art would not seem able to render such striking likeness, teacher S. had no doubts that he found himself in Ishinome’s dwelling. His friend, teacher N., however, made fun of his guesses. Over the two weeks of their stay in her house the mysterious and probably elderly woman never let the young men see her face. She cooked for the friends and made a drug ointment for teacher N. who had been wounded in the mountains. But the principal character doubted her good heartedness suspecting that “Ishinome” was just waiting for the right moment “to enlarge her collection” of statues with two new ones. After the woman petrified a bird thus proving that she was Ishinome to the friends, and teacher S. found some things that had belonged to his mother in a barn behind her house, teacher N. sneaked into the hostess’ bedroom to check whether she kept her “human” eyes in a secret box as the numerous variants of the legend of Ishinome said. Having found the petrified friend in front of the woman’s bedroom in the morning, the young man demanded that she let him go
