«ISSUES OF JAPANOLOGY, vol. 10» St-Petersburg State Univ 2024 547 In 1870 Kurono entered a private school, where he attended lectures on Chinese classics and Chinese history. Even as a child, Kurono, along with Enomoto, participated in negotiations with Russian representatives in Hokkaido, which may have determined his future fate. In 1872, he entered the Russian language school founded by Nikolai Kasatkin in the Kandasurugadai district of Tokyo. Two years later, in March 1874, Kurono entered the Russian language department of the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages, the director of which was the famous philosopher Nakae Chomin. He was taught Russian by the elder brother of the famous doctor in physiology I.I.Mechnikov – Lev Ilyich Mechnikov. Kurono himself noted: "at school, at the request of his father, he chose the Russian language, with which he received a general European education under the guidance of Russians: G.Trachtenberg, Mechnikov, Kostylev V.Ya. (1848-1918), Bogomolov and Gotsky-Danilovich 2 ". In 1879, before graduating from school, he became Mechnikov's assistant in teaching Russian, and from 1881 he received a position as a full–time teacher. Given the interest in learning Russian in Japan at that time, there were many Japanese students among Kurono who later became famous, including the founder of modern Japanese literature Fatabatei Shimei. According to eyewitnesses, Kurono himself was quite extravagant at that time. He did not recognize European- style clothes, in class he was always dressed in a traditional wafuka and his invariable attribute was a powerful iron cane. 2 Biographical Dictionary of professors and teachers of the Imperial St. Petersburg University for the past third quarter of a century of its existence. 1869-1894.
