«ISSUES OF JAPANOLOGY, vol. 10» St-Petersburg State Univ 2024 549 Arinori joined the editorial department (Hansyukeku) in The Ministry of Education and has been tasked with completing the compilation of the Russian-Japanese dictionary that was started earlier. In the summer of 1886, the dictionary was completed and in September Kurono went to Russia for scientific purposes. After spending some time in Vladivostok, following the advice of Japan's Plenipotentiary Envoy in Russia Nishi Tokujiro 3 , Kurono heads to St. Petersburg. The trip to St. Petersburg took quite a long time and the 28-year-old Kurono arrived in the capital only in November 1887. Under the patronage of the Nishi Tokujiro, since autumn of 1888 Kurono began teaching Japanese at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg University, simultaneously writing various textbooks on the Japanese language. Eight manuals prepared by him have been preserved in the library of the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University by now. "In Japan Kurono was baptized according to the Orthodox rite and took the name Joseph Nikolaevich… He not only regularly lectures, but also constantly publishes textbooks that are extremely useful for students" 4 . Kurono's teaching career at the university lasted for almost 30 years, until 1916. V.M.Alpatov notes that "Russia became his second homeland, he taught at St.Petersburg 3 Nishi Tokujiro (1847-1912) – a Japanese statesman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1897-1898. He left a significant mark on the history of St. Petersburg University. Having attended a law course at the university in 1872-73, from October 1874, on the recommendation of Professor V.P.Vasiliev, he began teaching Japanese at the Faculty of Oriental Languages. 4 Babintsev A.A.
