As the Japanese authors point out, Kurono not only contributed to the spread of the study of the Japanese language and Japanese studies in general in Russia, but also laid the foundation for the development of Japanese studies in Europe and the United States. Kurono was the first teacher of the outstanding Japanese scholars Nikolai Iosifovich Konrad and Nikolai Alexandrovich Nevsky. During his stay in St.Petersburg, Kurono was associated with all Japanese envoys and ambassadors who worked in Russia from 1874 to 1917 – from Enomoto Takeaki to Uchida Kosai. During 30 years Kurono was closely linked with all the Japanese living in the capital – he was contacted when it was necessary to find a good doctor or a teacher of the Russian language, rent an apartment and many other household issues. Kurono was a recognized expert not only in the field of the Japanese language, but also gave advice on issues of politics, economics and the history of Japan. Thus, Kurono was a fairly well- known personality in St. Petersburg, having, in addition to the Japanese, many representatives of the Russian government among his good acquaintances. Kurono died at the age of 59 on February 8, 1918 6 in the village of Tosno near Petrograd on the way from Gatchina to Gryazovets (Vologda province) where he decided to move with the Japanese diplomatic corps to get through hard times. The funeral was held at the expense of Petrograd University. 5 Alpatov V.M. The study of the Japanese language in Russia and the USSR. M., Nauka, 1988. p.21. (In Russian: Алпатов В. М.
