Serin (The Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Moscow, pavel-serin@yandex.ru) CENSUSES AND ETHNIC POLITICS IN MODERN INDONESIA Abstract: In 1930 the Netherlands tried to apply a ‘european’ ethnic classification to Indonesia for the first time. The Soekarno and Soeharto regimes ignored the ethnic issue in the censuses and tried to build a united Indonesian nation, forming it around the principles of “Pancha Sila” and the limited number of permitted religions. In 2000, Indonesia returned to the issue of the ethnic and linguistic composition of the population in the censuses. Keywords: Indonesia, census, ethnic politics, language planning, ethnic identity.
