Международная научная конференция, посвященная 65-й годовщине начала изучения языков ЮВА в нашей стране Nguyen Thi Vinh Linh (Quang Nam University, Vietnam, nguyenthivinhlinh@gmail.com) THE EDUCATIONAL POLICY OF THE BRITISH COLONIAL GOVERNMENT FOR INDIGENOUS MALAYS AND THE EDUCATIONAL POLICY OF THE FRENCH COLONIAL GOVERNMENT FOR VIETNAMESE PEOPLE (DURING THE LATE 19 th AND EARLY 20 th CENTURIES) — A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH Abstract: In the first part of the XIX century, by displacing the Portuguese and the Dutch from the Malayan peninsula, Britain established successfully their domination in this area. Due to colonial attitude, initially, the British colonial government did not focus on developing the local education. However, in the first part of the XX century, because of a lack of native human resources serving the civil administrative system in Malayan colonies, they were forced to apply a new educational policy for native people. Although this policy emphasized cultural and racial differences between immigrant and indigenous communities leading to obvious ethnic isolation and social status gap among them, it had positive impacts on Malayan society. At the same time, in French Cochinchina, the French colonial government also enforced a separate educational policy for Vietnamese people. Therefore, in the sphere of this paper, we will focus on the educational policy of the British colonial government related to the indigenous Malays and its positive and negative impacts on this community.
