Международная научная конференция, посвященная 65-й годовщине начала изучения языков ЮВА в нашей стране Tran Thi Que Chau (Hue University or Education, Vietnam, tqchau@gmail.com) THE ROLE OF THE CHINESE FOR THE FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTHEAST ASIA’S TRADE CENTER IN THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES: CASE STUDY OF MANILA Abstract: The 16 th and 17 th centuries were considered a turning point in the history of Southeast Asian trade, also known as the “trade boom period”. The presence of Western countries had prompted Southeast Asian countries to increasingly integrate into international trade. One of its consequences was the establishment of major trade centers in Southeast Asia such as Batavia, Sumatra, Ayuthaya, Pho Hien, Hoi An, Manila, ...The birth and development of these commercial cities had been contributed by the immigrant Chinese community. In the case of Manila, the Chinese ’ s role was expressed in three aspects. Firstly, the regular presence of the Chinese is a key factor in the establishment of the largest Spanish settlement in Manila; Secondly, the Chinese acted as a “bridge” for trade between the Philippines and China, providing a major volume of goods for intra-regional trade and Manila Galleon international trade. Finally, the Chinese was labour that provides essential services to residents of metropolitan Manila. Keywords: The Chinese, trade centre, Manila, sixteenth century, seventeenth century.
