g 73 h The Odyssey of the Andalusian Conquerors of Crete... and passengers and their weaponry is sorely missing. Ibn Ḥayyān reports that 15,000 Cordoban refugees traveling to Alexandria embarked on forty ships. 55 Obviously the number mentioned by Ibn Ḥayyān was greatly exaggerated. al-Maqrīzi and Ibn Sa‘īd report about 10,000 men, 56 and more realistically al- Ya‘qūbi reduced their number to 3000, transported on forty ships. 57 Although each warship carried only an average of 200 crew, 3,000 passengers could have been accommodated in forty warships of the 9 th -10 th century since they were large enough to carry troops 58 (see Αppendix A ). The type of ships 59 which carried the Andalusian fugitives to Alexandria is not known. All relevant sources are mute; nor have any modern authors 55 Ibn Ḥayyān, ibid. 56 Maqrīzi, Al-Mawā‘iẓ wa’l I‘tibār fī Dhikr al Khiṭaṭ wa’l Āthār , I, Būlāq 1270, 322. Ibn Sa‘īd, Al-Mughrib, 42. 57 al-Ya‘qūbi , Ta’rīkh , II, Beirut 1965, reprinted 1995, 446. Of course, the number of forty ships, which appears in most sources, is disputable. 58 For the crews of such warships see Christides et al., eds., Treasures of Arab-Byzantine Navi- gation (7 th –13 th c.) , Athens 2004, 8; J.
