The authors of the present article were able to view Kúlubnaarti from the site of the tomb of Shaikh ‘Akásha. Nearby there was a great deal of activ- ity in gold-mining. Any environmental hazards associated with this should be monitored carefully. Further south along the river the regions of Sikkуod and Mбhas are still intact. Their Nubian language and culture are supported by traditional environment. However, they are threatened by large-scale projects of dam building. Wadi Halfa has the opportunity to create a favourable context for its cul- tural projects by turning to traditional Nubian architecture for inspiration. Em- bracing traditional Nubian architectural styles would not only add an aesthetic value, but also provide a functional benefit. For example, adobe houses are known for their ability to provide both warmth during the winter and insula- tion from the heat during the summer. A number of such buildings have been designed by Dr. Abdalla Sabbar. Another important development relates to initiatives in cultural pres- ervation and documentation.
