m 38 n Herman Bell and Ré Phillips coronation ceremony? To reflect on these questions, the Cultural Centre could organize excursions to existing historic sites by the River Nile, such as Jébel Séesee and the Nubian royal village of Kúkkee nearby. Project E: Sharing Resettlement Experiences Internationally A Unit of Resettlement within the Centre at Wadi Halfa might share ex- periences worldwide with communities that have been moved as a result of dam building. This Unit could focus on various responses involving musical and artistic creativity, which people display after having experienced loss and separation from their traditional environment. The Unit would aim to forge a network of international links. Overall, the Wadi Halfa Cultural Centre has the potential to be home to a number of important cultural and documentary activities. It could eas- ily serve as a key space for facilitating and coordinating projects and poli- cies that serve the goals of enhancing the vitality of the Nubian languages, supporting other aspects of Nubian culture and communicating on Nubian culture through an international network. For the Centre to achieve its goals, it would be important to encourage sponsorship and participation and also to provide the necessary space, consultants, knowledge resources and technical facilities. Before carrying out these goals, the Centre would also need to identify its international audience. The following two groups are proposed as being particularly important: the children of the Nubian diaspora who risk being separated from their Nubian cultural origins; and many members of Afri- can-Caribbean and African-American communities, who have cultivated a fictive kinship with Nubia based on their various understandings of Nubia and Nubian culture that feature prominently in the popular imagination. For these communities and others, Nubia has been a transnational symbol of power and prosperity. The particular interest in Nubia by the African dias- pora reminds us of the prominent features of Nubian allure that have cap- tivated the world for thousands of years, such as ideals of beauty, power, peace and progress. With this in mind, we maintain that there is no need to develop a new brand image. Therefore, this article seeks not to create a new vision, but to promulgate a vision of Nubia that already exists. What is needed is more ac- curate communication in presenting characteristics of historic Nubia beneath the flood waters. Any vision for the future must consider the results of the dam which was activated in 1964. Important relationships were broken, and notably the link between the Nile river and the Halfawis (the people in the region of Wadi Halfa). We hope to see the construction of new, meaningful relationships
